Jan's Artist Statement

I’ve always had a great fascination for the past—the ancient—as the root of our common humanity and history.  At the same time, it is the new—the contemporary, the excitement of today which affects my esthetics and my passion.  Combining these two forces forms the essence of my work; issues of time and memory, past and present, and the importance of nature and human presence in all of this form its content.

I work directly in wax to create sculpture which is cast into bronze.  I also create hand made paper which I cast into highly textured and dimensional wall sculptures that often incorporate a variety of mixed media.  Most recently I’ve begun working with clay which is fired and then painted.  My love of bronze is also reflected in the metallic look of many of my paper and clay wall sculptures.  Through choice of materials, textures, form and color I hope to evoke an historical past that connects with the present in a relevant and contemporary way.  One of the things I like most about working abstractly is that viewers can approach the art without preconceptions and bring their own ideas and interpretations to each piece.

My bronze sculpture lends itself to enlargement as outdoor sculpture that will engage the public in a variety of ways.  In outdoor or intimate settings, my work provides the viewer with many different visual experiences, depending upon the angle from which the work is seen.  No two views are the same.  That’s how I like to look at the world.
